Aiken surveyed the muddy mess at the Humanity Project job site. A motorcycle pulled up to the curb, and Bullworth Clayton, his friend who owned the garage where he got his truck serviced, hopped off.
Aiken held out his hand to shake Bull’s. “Hey, guy. Nice bike.”
“Thanks, dude. Had to modify it a bit since I have a new riding partner,” Bull said.
“Yeah, I heard about your engagement to April Church. Congratulations,” Aiken said.
Bull looked out over the site. “Man, what happened here?”
“My inspection failed, and I got behind. If things had gone as I’d hoped yesterday, the concrete could have been poured into the dry trench, covered and cured by now. Instead, now I have a mud pit.”
“Anything I can do to help?” Bull asked.
“Thanks for offering, but I developed a plan last night to get things back on track. I stayed up half the night worrying about the family I’m building this for. Came up with a rock-solid idea.”
“So, what are you going to do?”
“Pump out the water, dig the foundation a few inches deeper, and fill it with rock. It’s an expensive undertaking, but I have to do it.” And he would pay for it all out of his own pocket—that is to say, out of Hughes Construction’s pockets. The money Hughes Construction amassed when he built in Charleston, on the barrier islands and on the deep-water lots along the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, afforded him luxuries like that.
“Well, this might help.” Bull pulled out a check for $5,000.00 and handed it to him. “If you need some for this, use it. If not, use it to put in those upgrades we talked about last time you were in the garage.”
Aiken took the money, gave Bull a hearty handshake, and then a big slap on his back. “Man, you don’t know how much we appreciate this. It’ll go a long way. The family getting this home will love what we can do with this amount.”
“I’m glad I could help,” Bull said with his hands on his hips. He kicked at a mound of dirt. “Got to get going. I’m picking up April for lunch.”
Aiken looked toward the road at Bull’s bike. “Last time we talked, you weren’t so sure about her. Had some issues with the whole motorcycle scene, didn’t she?”
Bull let out a chuckle. “You’d better believe she did. But things are different now. It’s funny how some people draw conclusions a bit too fast sometimes.”
Aiken had drawn a few about Charlene and had assumed that she’d probably drawn a few about him.
“So she put all motorcycle people into one basket?”
“Oh. No. I was talking about me. She’s nothing like I had first thought,” Bull said and smiled. “I’ll see you around the garage,” he said, waved, and left.
Aiken nodded. He wondered if he’d made incorrect assumptions about Charlene, too. It was difficult to decipher what she’d done for her job from what her actual intentions were.
Bertie beamed as he walked past Aiken to the trailer to turn off the pump.
